Doha: The Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah yesterday led Qatar’s delegation to a meeting of Friends of Syria basic group in London.
It was attended by foreign ministers of the group’s member countries and representative of the Syrian opposition.
They discussed the massive random acts of violence perpetrated by the Syrian regime against civilians, the best ways of supporting the opposition, achievement of urgent progress in the alleviation of the increasingly deteriorating humanitarian crisis and the revival of the political process which has stumbled due to the regime’s reluctance to negotiate.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Foreign Minister said Friends of Syria group had condemned illegitimate elections conducted by the regime at the expense of innocent Syrian people’s lives, calling on the international community to categorically reject such illegitimate elections because they contradict the concepts of democracy, freedom and justice.
Dr Al Attiyah also held the Syrian regime responsible for the barbarism and mass annihilation of the Syrian people, as well as the escalation of violence and the prevention of reaching out humanitarian assistance to the victims of the war that has been waged by the regime for three years.
He said Friends of Syria group agreed during the meeting to increase support to the moderate opposition by backing the national alliance.
The Foreign Minister said member states of the basic group had directed senior officials to prepare a plan of action to face all possibilities.
