DOHA: A bidder paid an incredible QR10.1m ($2.77m) for an easy-to-remember cellphone number at a charity auction of special mobile numbers by Ooredoo here yesterday.
The number began with five and had seven zeroes. It was a VIP charity auction for special telephone numbers conducted by Ooredoo as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility work.
The overall figure raised for the night was QR30.16m ($8.3m), with the highest auctioned number selling for QR10.1m.
VIP guests and customers were invited to bid for their favorite number from a range of 50 special numbers auctioned at the Four-Seasons Hotel.
The auction witnessed strong demand as customers joined in the spirit of giving back to the community, and bid for the VIP numbers, said Ooredoo.
The most desirable special numbers were those that started with the same number, had many of the same numbers, or had parallel digits such as 234. Previous Ooredoo auctions found that simpler numbers sold far more due to memorability and status factors.
