DOHA: A separate department will be opened at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to closely monitor salary payment to workers once the Wage Protection System (WPS), whereby all workers in the country are paid their salaries through banks, is in place.
Workers for the department are to be recruited soon. The Labour Ministry is also increasing the number of inspectors in its inspection department to mount raids on companies and labour camps.
This was disclosed yesterday in a speech of the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, which was read by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, H E Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi.
The speech was read out at an event organised by Al Sharq newspaper on the protection of workers in Qatar on the occasion of May Day. The labour law is being amended to make it comply with international standards. The WPS is one such step that will guarantee that workers get paid in time.
Two labour cities with a capacity of more than 100,000 workers each in the Industrial Area are being developed by the Engineering Office of the government and by Barwa Real Estate Company each and they are expected to be opened within a few weeks.
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning is about to allot five areas all over the country to build labour camps that will accommodate more than 120,000 workers. These are in addition to those accommodations that are being developed by private companies.
