Tokyo: Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan met at the imperial palace in Tokyo city yesterday H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF).
Their royal highnesses welcomed Sheikha Moza wishing her success. They discussed a set of issues of mutual concern esepecially the flourishing relations between the two countries.
Sheikha Moza later met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss joint cooperation in the fields of education, culture, science and technology.
The Qatar Foundation Chairperson also conferred with Japanese Miniter Of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Hakubun Shimomura to discuss exchange of students, scholarships, research cooperation as related to priorities and grand challenges involved in Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS).
Earlier yesterday Sheikha Moza visited the Sony Corp Headquarters in Tokyo.
Sheikha Moza met with Sony Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai, Director of the Sony Computer Science Laboratories Hiroaki Kitano and Sony Executive Vice-President Officer Shoji Nemoto to discuss areas of computing research in Qatar and Japan.
Sheikha Moza also met representatives from each of the Sony Corporation, Japan’s National Institute of Informatics, Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, the University of Tokyo and Keio University. Talks during the meeting dealt with ways of using new technology for social benefit and the prospects of future cooperation between technology institutes in Japan and Qatar Institute for Computing Research.
Regarding the goals of the visit, Sheikha Moza said that the visit aims to move the Qatari-Japanese relations to a new stage based on scientific cooperation to face the challenges of the 21st century.
She was accompanied during the visit to Sony Corporation by Qatar Foundation’s President of Research and Development Faisal Al Suwaidi and Executive Director of Qatar Computing Research Institute Dr Ahmed Elmagarmid.
The visit comes after a series of meetings held in Doha last year between senior executives at Sony Corporation and senior Qatari officials, including Northwestern University in Qatar.
Sheikha Moza also met eight Qatari students. The students said that the reasons for choosing Japan to complete their higher education is its progress in the fields of scientific research and engineering, as well as their willingness to recognise the Japanese unique culture which has some similar values of Arab culture and traditions.
Sheikha Moza confirmed her support and encouragement to the Qatari students in Japan to continue their educational journey and then return to Qatar with, not only the academic certificate, but also with the positive Japanese customs.
