DOHA: Ooredoo will join monuments and companies around the world to mark Earth Hour on Saturday.
It will switch off all lights and non-essential systems at its iconic tower in West Bay and its Airport HQ2, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Ooredoo employees have also pledged to switch off lights at home during the event.
Earth Hour is a worldwide initiative by World Wide Fund for Nature, which has grown from a single lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, to a global event that engages more than 7,000 cities and towns.
Ooredoo was the first company in Qatar to commit to Earth Hour in 2009, taking part in the largest mass participation event to demonstrate its commitment to protect the environment.
Fatima Sultan Al Kuwari, Director Community & Public Relations, said: “Ooredoo continues to support environmental initiatives, as we work with the community to reduce energy wastage and raise awareness of key issues.”
Ooredoo also announced that it will no longer send paper bills to business customers from June 30, as part of efforts to become a paperless workplace.
Currently, business customers receive a paper version of their bill and their chosen bill and bill analysis in electronic formats. Ooredoo stopped paper bills in December 2011, and has since reduced paper consumption by a huge margin. The ‘Go Green’ overhaul is part of its support of Qatar National Strategic Vision 2030 which prioritises environmental initiatives.
