DOHA: Qatar Foundation for Protection and Social Rehabilitation celebrated International Women’s Day at Villaggio Mall.
Activities focused on combating all types of violence against women, including domestic violence, and woman’s position in society from a social perspective.
The programme was organised to fulfil the UN’s call to celebrate the day, stress the importance of women’s rights according to Palermo Protocol, and highlight violence against them on domestic and human rights levels.
An exhibition of photos of all forms of violence against women was held and activities highlighted the social position of woman, in general and within the family in particular, as well as domestic workers.
A free-wall board was set up for the public to write comments and notes about the importance of the day, and the woman’s position in the Arab society.
A female participant wrote, “Woman is the society, woman is the mother, the sister and the daughter and the wife.”
Shihara Resley praised the idea of the day and said: “I am a Sri Lankan woman working as a chief editor of a newspaper dedicated to women  in my country. I am on a visit to Qatar, and I am impressed by the attention paid to women by your foundation and your call to eliminate violence against them while addressing their problems.”
Visitors to the mall were asked random questions and winners were presented with gifts.
