Doha: Marking National Sport Day, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC)  unveiled a plan to set up playgrounds equipped with integrated sport and entertainment facilities.
The plan for Al Firjan developed playgrounds was announced at a press conference yesterday.
The projects are part of the QOC’s efforts to provide people in different age groups with multiple sport facilities and entertainment services across the country.
The press conference was attended by Engineer Hamad Lahdan Al Mahanadi, Director of the Maintenance and Operations Department at the QOC, and Engineer Hamad Saleh Al Mahanadi, Head of Engineering Project Section at the QOC.
Hamad Lahdan said the QOC has established multiple sport facilities and entertainment services in Qatar over the past years based on Qatar National Vision 2030 which aims at building a healthy and active society able to contribute to national development through sports.
“Many sport facilities have been converted to sport-social facilities to serve professional athletes and individuals who live near the facilities.
Improvement work is underway in stages at six First Division Clubs, four of them in Al Khor, Al Wakra and Al Rayyan will be inaugurated soon, while work on three clubs — Al Sadd, Al Arabi and Qatar — will be completed in April, he added.
Hamad Saleh stressed that the QOC took upon itself to achieve strategic goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, including increasing community participation in sports, planning community and elite sport facilities and developing talents of athletes.
“The QOC plans to develop existing sports facilities, including sport clubs, youth centres, federation headquarters and Al Firjan playgrounds.
“We also plan to establish new developed playgrounds to serve the community. We have 20 Firjan playgrounds, including facilities for football and walkways.
“Al Wekair playground includes football, volleyball, and basketball areas as well as walking lanes, kid zone, cafeteria and mosque,”  Hamad Saleh said.
He said the QOC also plans to build 12 playgrounds in Al Rayyan, Bani Hajer, Al Khor, Abu Zuluf, Al Kheesa, Al Sailiya, Al Nasriya, Al Ghuwairiya, Al Amriya, Al Ruwais, Lekhraib and Umm Al Ezam.
He said the new playgrounds will include football, basketball and volleyball facilities based on international standards with regard to lighting and surface.
He said Al Firjan playgrounds will play a key role in providing all community members with a chance to practise sports as the playgrounds which include a wide range of services, are in most of residential districts.
The QOC revealed a five-year plan to develop 15 Al Firjan playgrounds with a rate of three per a year across the country. The plan includes the establishment of integrated sport and social centres for women. QNA
