DOHA: The police arrested a six-member Asian gang extorting money and valuables from people pretending as security personnel.
Wearing the Qatari traditional dress, the gang members broke into several accommodations, impersonating as policemen, the Ministry of Interior said yesterday.
They successfully employed tricks on citizens and residents to steal money and other belongings from their homes until they were caught by the police. Several passports and bank cards were also stolen by the gang.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Ministry swung into action after it received many complaints from residents of the suspicious operation of the gang. Details given by one of the victims about the main suspect became crucial in catching the culprits.
The main suspect was arrested following an investigation. During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime and guided the officers to other members of the gang.
After taking approval from the Public Prosecution, the police launched a search in their accommodation during which large amount of jewellery and watches were found, along with a number of credit cards, passports, mobile phones and tools used in their operation.
The gang members were later produced before the victims for identification and then referred to the Industrial Area Police section for further procedures, the Ministry said in a statement.
The Ministry urged the public to extend their support and cooperation to catch people involving in suspicious and fraudulent activities.
