DOHA: Qatar has signed agreements with 30 countries to recruit foreign workers for the massive infrastructure projects in the country, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs H E Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi has said.
Speaking to the media after opening the Grand Mall Hypermarket at West End Park in Mesaimeer on Friday, the Minister called on private companies to set up exclusive commercial and entertainment facilities for the growing number of expatriate workers in the country.
“We want to bring in workers from different manpower-exporting countries especially with the huge investments that the state intends to pump into a large number of infrastructure projects over the next decade, that will cost billions of dollars,” said the Minister. On the role of the Ministry of Labour in solving problems faced by expatriate workers, the Minister said that there are separate departments at the Ministry to carry out inspections at worksites and labour camps, follow up on labour issues and resolve disputes between workers and employers, in line with the Qatari labour law. Commenting on the West End Park project, the Minister said that such commercial and entertainment facilities address the needs of diverse communities and the migrant workforce in the country.
Mana Ibrahim Al Mana, chairman of Qatar Asset Management that manages West End Park, said there is a parallel project expected to be completed next year, to build a housing complex for workers as well as families for accommodating about 70,000 people.
