DOHA: Ten people were injured, three of them seriously, when a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a restaurant on Salwa Road last afternoon.

The incident occurred in the Al Katam restaurant near Midmac roundabout.

“The Civil Defence controlled a limited fire in Al Katam restaurant from a gas cylinder explosion, wounding ten people who were present in the restaurant,” the Ministry of Interior said in a posting on its Twitter account last evening.

Eight of the 10 injured remain admitted at Hamad General Hospital. The three who sustained severe injuries were shifted to the intensive care unit in the trauma section, according to hospital sources. The three are Nepalese, while the nationalities of the other victims were not known.

The restaurant was partially damaged in the explosion, according to eyewitnesses.

The incident led to a heavy traffic jam on the road leading from Ramada intersection to Midmac roundabout, as motorists halted their vehicles following the loud explosion.

There was panic in the air, with visitors to the restaurant and the surrounding shops fleeing the smoke and fire. Police and civil defence personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
