Doha: Qtel is expected to appear with its new brand name in Qatar by mid-March.

“Qtel will become Ooredoo from mid-March in Qatar, as announced in Barcelona this week,” Qtel said in a statement issued to this daily yesterday.

Following the re-branding of Qatar telecommunication company earlier this week, Dr Nasser Marafih, Ooredoo Group CEO, said that Ooredoo is expected to launch its new brand by March 11 in Qatar, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Marafih said that the new brand name is more than a just logo or slogan.

“It represents a lifestyle and innovation, and our mission to meet our clients’ ambitions,” Marafih said. He also said that the name Ooredoo will not be translated into Arabic since it is very simple and its articulation is clear, according to the daily.

“The company is currently studying a number of options for further expansion in different markets,” he said.

All the operating companies in which Qtel owns a majority interest will adopt the new brand name under a two-year phase out plan, the Ooredoo Group CEO said.

“The companies have already prepared for the next step,” he added. The Minister of Business and Trade H E Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al Thani said that the change in brand name will push the company forward.
