DOHA: A website dedicated to Qatar’s National Sport Day, www.sportday.qa, has announced competitions to be held today in which winners will get cash prizes totalling QR250,000.

A special ‘Be Slim’ competition will select the slimmest person, who will be awarded a prize of  QR100,000. The runner-up will receive QR30,000 and the third spot winner will get QR20,000.  The fourth prize will be QR15,000 while QR5,000 will be given to each of the next 20 winners.

The competition aims to create awareness about a healthy lifestyle and the dangers of obesity. People can access the website for information related to National Sport Day.

Though the day has been declared a public holiday, government and private sector institutions have lined up a slew of activities for their employees.

The main event, organised by Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), will begin at 8am at Doha Corniche near the General Post Office. Thousands of balloons will be released into the air to mark the opening of the event.

This year, QOC has organised activities for five days to coincide with the National Sport Day. A special area for sports activities, an information centre, eateries and a booth to sell sport equipment have been set up for the convenience of the public.

The QOC has also asked all sports clubs to allow the public to use their facilities from 9am to 10pm today. Together with the QOC, government agencies and private firms are holding many events at the Corniche, Aspire Zone, Katara and other places.

The Supreme Council of Health, together with the ministries of Justice, Energy and Industry, and Interior will hold many activities for the first time at Al Reffa Street. These include cycling, group walk, table tennis, basketball, baby foot, traditional game kerm, chess and physical exercise.

Water sports, including sailing, rowing and canoe-kayak competitions will be held at the Corniche. A walkathon will be held from Orry roundabout to Sheraton roundabout.

Katara too will host a number of events, including an awareness event by the Hamad Medical Corporation. From 8am to 4pm, activities like walkathons and water sports will be held. Free motorbike rides will be organised by Qatar Motorbike Federation from 1pm to 4pm.
