Doha: As part of the National Sport Day and imminent sports festivities in Qatar, Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) revealed its ambitious plan for the day.

Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla, Vice-Chairman and CEO of Qapco, told a press conference yesterday that the Qapco Club will be launched on February 12.

He praised the initiative  of the Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to establish the National Sport Day for Qatar, as a key reminder of the importance of regular physical activity in maintaining one’s  health.

Dr Al Mulla said:  “Such decisions remind us — the corporation — of the role we play in promoting healthy lifestyles among our employees and within our community. We want to ensure that Qapco employees and their families are aware of the positive outcomes of  sports.  It is also important for us to know they have a chance to practise sport regularly and that they have access to sporting infrastructure.”

For the past 30 years, Qapco has always placed emphasis on sports.

The company has established an active sport committee in charge of organising regular tournaments among employees. Several annual competitions enable employees and the workforce to practise their favourite sports and games such as football or cricket, a press release from Qapco said.

The sports club in Messaieed will be unveiled on the National Sport Day, during an official ceremony that will be attended by senior officials, VIPs and Qapco employees.

The grand opening will be followed by sports programmes for the day. Over 43 games and competitions are planned for staff and their families.  Over 4,000 people are expected to participate in the festivities.
