Sri Lankans mark Independence Day

DOHA: Sri Lankans in Qatar yesterday celebrated their country’s 65th Independence Day at their embassy yesterday.

Ambassador Jayantha Palipane commenced the celebrations by hoisting the national flag.

A large number of Sri Lankans  attended the flag-hoisting ceremony in the morning. 

The ambassador also read out President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s address to the nation, along with translations in Tamil and English. 

Children from the community rendered the national anthem and traditional ‘Jayamangala Geetha’.

The Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani sent a cable of greetings to the president. 

The Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent a similar cable to the president.
