DOHA: Four Asian runaway workers who ran a money-spinning illicit liquor brewing and marketing racket in Al Khor have been arrested and turned over to the prosecution for questioning and legal action.

Law-enforcement officials busted the gang following a tip-off from a Qatari citizen who complained that the stench of liquor always hung in the air around what turned out to be the hideout of the arrested foursome.

A police party raided the place after taking the necessary legal measures and discovered that the place was indeed being used to make illicit home-made liquor, the Ministry of Interior said on its website.

The police recovered several barrels containing the illicit liquor and found a huge amount of cash at the place along with laptops and mobile phones.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. It was also discovered that they were runaway workers and complaints that they had run away had been lodged by their sponsors.

The assistant director of the Northern Security Department, Colonel Mohammed Abdullah Al Shahwani, lauded the cooperation of citizens with the security departments and said it positively reflected on the security and stability of the country.
