DOHA: Qatar faces the challenge of recruiting almost one million foreign workers ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022, an expert from the International Labour Organisation (ILO)

has said.

Dr Azfar Khan, a specialist in migration at the ILO office in Beirut said, with this huge influx in view, it is time to come out with ideas and suggestions to ensure the rights of the large number of expatriate workers will be protected, Al Sharq reported.

He was talking on the sidelines of a workshop on “regional capacity building for advocacy of human rights and migrant workers in the Middle East and Asia” which began here yesterday.

Khan said there are 15 million expatriate workers in the GCC and Saudi Arabia has been attracting the largest number of workers.

The challenge facing the ILO is that a large number of expatriate workers in the GCC are not working legally.

This leads to losing their rights and hence the necessity for developing laws that protect their rights under the sponsorship regime, he added.
