DUBAI: A Bahraini court has stripped nine Shias of citizenship, for the first time implementing a 2013 law which revokes the nationality of terror convicts, a judicial source said yesterday.
The nine men were found guilty on Wednesday of “forming a terror organisation to smuggle weapons to Bahrain and help detainees to escape,” the source added.
They were part of a group of 15 tried over a “terrorist plot” against the kingdom, for spying for Iran, and accused of possessing weapons to attack security forces. One defendant was acquitted, while the others, including the nine, were jailed for between five and 15 years.
