DOHA: Passengers travelling on Qatar Airways (QA) and transiting through Doha can take free tour of major tourist spots, the national carrier said Tuesday.

The new plan in association with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is to promote tourism here, QA said today in a media statement.

QA Holidays Acting Head Nigel Burnell Stoker said, "We are promoting Qatar as a tourism destination.

We want Qatar Airways' passengers to enjoy a unique experience of Doha free of charge."

Passengers transiting through Doha are enjoying the city tour, response received since February 1 show.

QA runs four tours daily, all at full capacity, he added.

QTA Marketing and Promotions Director Rashed Al Qurese said, "Doha is a fascinating city, it combines modernity with rich cultural tradition. With the Doha City Tour, passengers can see all the city has to offer and find reasons to return for a longer stay."

Qatar's tourism is growing and is contributing to the diversification of the economy as per the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 announced last week, he said and added QTA is working with partners to promote tourism in the country.

Passengers with five to 12 hours transit time in Doha can book the free city tour at the Doha City Tour counter at Doha International Airport.

Booking is on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to availability of seats on the coach.

The duration of the tour is around three hours. It takes passengers through key landmarks in Doha city, including the Museum of Islamic Art, the Corniche, West Bay area, Katara Cultural and Heritage Village, The Pearl Qatar and Souq Waqif.

The Museum of Islamic Art is an icon for art, culture and heritage, housing precious works from more than 200 years of Islamic civilisation.

Souq Waqif offers the bustle and vitality of an old traditional souq with perfectly replicated buildings featuring traditional architecture.

Here the traveller will find handicrafts on display as well as traditional foods and spices, perfumes, fabrics and art.

Katara Cultural Village is the focal point for arts and culture in Doha and has art galleries, an amphitheatre for opera, drama and concerts performance as well as restaurants and a beach and water sports facilities.

Qatar is also a leading business travel destination, and a wide selection of five-star luxury hotels cater to the international traveller, offering the best of Arabian hospitality.

The Doha City Tour is conducted in an air-conditioned coach with an English speaking guide providing information and insights about Doha for the full duration of the tour, QA said. (QNA)
