NEW YORK: The State of Kuwait, on behalf of the GCC States, has declared support for Malaysia's nomination for occupying the permanent Asian seat at the Security Council during 2015-2016.
The Kuwaiti-GCC backing for Malaysia's candidacy for the key seat was announced last night by the Diplomatic Attache of the permanent Kuwaiti mission at the UN, Alyaa Abdullah Al-Muzaini, (KUNA) news agency reported.
Speaking on behalf of the member states of the six-seat Gulf Cooperation Council during the monthly meeting of the Asian Group, Alyaa Abdullah Al-Muzaini expressed hope the Malaysians would succeed in their bid to occupy the SC seat, noting that Kuala Lumpur's move would, certainly bolster the Council quest for preserving international peace and security.
Elections for the Council seats are due to be held in October.
Malaysia, if elected will replace South Korea, membership of which expires on the year-end. (QNA)
