DOHA: Qatar University (QU) has received a donation of 100 books from the Japanese Embassy in Qatar, the university said Wednesday.
The donation was done by the embassy in co-operation with Japan Foundation at a ceremony held at the organization's new library here.
QU President Professor Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad and Japanese Ambassador HE Kenjiro Monji attended the ceremony along with other QU staff and students, including those from QU's Japan Club.
Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Kenjiro Monji said, "I am so pleased to continue the tradition of book donations to Qatar University which started in 1989 and continued in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2012. We have to date donated 800 books to the library’s Japan Corner and this has contributed to students' further understanding of Japan, its language and culture."
The Ambassador further recalled Qatar's assistance to Japan following the earthquake in 2011, saying, "Thanks to your support, our recovery has been speedy".
The donated books cover a wide range of topics in Japanese and English - Japanese language, arts and craft such as origami and lacework, cuisine, architecture, lifestyle, and Tokyo city guide. Novels, comics and children's books were also included in the collection. (QNA)
