WASHINGTON: The United States yesterday announced its first case of a dangerous respiratory virus that originated in the Middle East and has a high death rate.
The person infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a healthcare provider who had travelled to Riyadh for work, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The patient is being cared for in an Indiana hospital and is “isolated in stable condition,” said Anne Schuchat, director of CDC’s National Center for Immunisation and Respiratory Diseases. The name and gender of the patient were not disclosed.
