Narrow escape for Mayawati

Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati had a narrow escape when the front wheel of her charter plane got stuck during landing, officials said. The incident took place at Lucknow airport when the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo was on her way back from campaigning in Maharashtra. As the plane neared the runway, all attempts to unstuck the front wheel came to a naught, forcing the pilot to do “something similar to belly landing”. The pilot alerted the air traffic control of the glitch and fire tenders, security personnel and an ambulance were rushed to the runway. The pilot succeeded in landing the plane.

Lightning kills two in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: At least two people were killed and three others injured when lightning struck them in Kerala, police said. Harilal, 25, was giving tuitions outside his home in the state capital when lightning struck and killed him. In the second incident, Abhinav, 12, was struck by lightning while standing in front of his house in Kozhikode city. He died on the spot.

Tamils celebrate New Year

Chennai: Tamils heralded the Tamil New Year yesterday with traditional fervour. The morning began with visits to temples and meeting or greeting relatives, friends and neighbours. The Tamil New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai, which normally falls on April 13 or 14.
