DOHA: Organisers of the fifth annual Qatar International Falcon and Hunting Festival say they are anticipating a bigger number of participants compared to the previous edition.

“This year we are expecting the number of participants will be much higher than the last edition because the weather is encouraging and we are giving enough time for registration, because last year many lost the chance to register,” said Mohammed Abdulatif Al Misned, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Gannas Association.

Registration starts on Wednesday and continues until January 5, from 4pm to 8pm at Al Burkah Hall, Building 33 at Katara.

“Competitions and activities have been divided into programmes based on the expected number of participants, taking into account the number of participants has been increasing every year,” said Al Misned, also Vice Chairman of the festival organising committee. Under the patronage of H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, this year’s festival, whose aim is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, will have many surprises.

Al Misned urged Qatari youth to preserve the country’s nature, including falcons and other birds. He also called on them to invest their free time positively by honing their talents and innovations in falconry and hunting, and pass this significant aspect of the Qatari heritage onto the next generation.

The festival is a chance for participants to forge ties with other falcon owners, exchange experiences and raise awareness about taking care of the environment, he said. “After a careful study, we set terms and conditions for the contests and participants are required to be aware of these. They can visit Al Gannas Association website for details,” he said.

Mohammad Al Baridi, Head of Finance and Administration at the organising committee, said they had developed a guide on contests and registration for participants. Those interested to join competitions should fill out a form indicating information such as the type of falcon and the contest it is going to join. They should also show the falcon to the committee to see if it fulfils requirements and is eligible for participation.

Participants from other countries can contact the committee by phone, fax or email. They should provide their name, nationality, contact number, passport number, the type of falcon and contest, its photo and permit for the falcon authenticated by customs and environment authorities. Those who want to participate in Al Mazain competition may register while the festival continues.
