MANILA: The Philippines raised storm alert levels yesterday as Typhoon Matmo threatened to drench the extreme north of the main island of Luzon with heavy rain as it churned toward Taiwan and mainland China.
Packing sustained winds of 130 kph and gusts of up to 160 kph, Matmo was moving at 24 kph northwest towards central Taiwan. The storm was estimated to be about 180 km north of Batanes group of islands last morning.
Storm alert number 2 was raised in the Batanes. The typhoon was also expected to bring rain to other parts of Luzon.
In China, the death toll from typhoon Rammasun reached 46 with another 25 missing, authorities said yesterday, as Matmo approached the country’s eastern coastline.
Rammasun has left 19 people dead in south China’s island province of Hainan, 18 in southwestern Yunnan and nine in neighbouring Guangxi, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a statement on its website.
