BEIJING: A Chinese man in a wheelchair who detonated a home-made bomb in Beijing’s airport after trying to draw attention to a nearly decade-long legal battle was sentenced to six years in jail, his lawyer said yesterday, sparking widespread sympathy and anger. A Beijing court found Ji Zhongxing, 34, guilty of causing an explosion, lawyer, Liu Xiaoyuan, said. State media confirmed the sentence. Ji detonated the bomb after being prevented from handing out leaflets that drew attention to his complaints. Ji, from eastern Shandong province, had been seeking redress for a claimed beating by police in southern Guangdong province in 2005 that left him wheelchair-bound. He had been petitioning for justice ever since. Detonating the bomb at Beijing’s main airport ensured widespread exposure for Ji, even though he and a policeman who received slight wounds were the only people hurt. He faced a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Jailed man’s mum seeks help

SEOUL: The mother of a US missionary jailed in North Korea for state subversion pleaded yesterday for the US government to help secure her ailing son’s release as she ended a trip to see him. Kenneth Bae, born in South Korea but a naturalised US citizen, was arrested last year while on a visit to North Korea and sentenced to hard labour for 15 years in May. North Korean media said his missionary activity constituted a crime against the state. His mother, Myunghee Bae, last week travelled to North Korea to see him. “I was happy to see him and to hold him, but it broke my heart to leave him behind. I am more anxious than ever to bring him home,” she said in a statement on a family-run website campaigning for his release. “I plead with our government to do everything in their power to secure my son’s release soon.” Bae, 45, was recently moved to a hospital after his health began to deteriorate.
