The UN Security Council after more than five months of brutal Israeli attacks on Gaza succeeded in passing a resolution for an immediate ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan. The Council's 14 members voted in favour of the resolution, while the US abstained.
UN chief Antonio Guterres led calls for the resolution to be implemented saying “failure would be unforgivable,” on social media platform X.
The news report said that after the resolution was passed 14-0 with the United States deciding not to use the veto the staid chamber broke into spontaneous applause, showing the growing international frustration with the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where thousands have lost their lives and people are on verge of famine due to the shortage of food and other essentials. Many officials from UN bodies and other organisations have warned that without urgent access to aid, it would spell disaster for the millions of displaced people.
The security council’s legally binding demand for a pause in the war - now in its sixth month - comes as much of the Gaza Strip is in ruins, most of its 2.3 million residents are displaced, and a third of the besieged population is on the brink of famine. More than 32,000 people have been killed and more than 74,000 wounded. Women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.
Qatar on Monday welcomed the Security Council’s resolution expressing hope that it represents a step towards a permanent cessation of hostilities, particularly given the dire humanitarian situation affecting civilians, including children and women.
In a statement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised the necessity of implementing the resolution, especially the cessation of hostilities, facilitating the urgent and unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into all areas of Gaza, and engaging positively in the ongoing negotiations, stressing in this context the continued mediation of Qatar, in cooperation with partners to stop the war on Gaza and addressing its humanitarian repercussions.
The international community welcomed the passing of the resolution and urged for the immediate implementation of the same calling for a permanent halt to the devastating war.
The Palestinian Presidency renewed its demand yesterday for stopping the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and creating an atmosphere that leads to a political horizon to put an end to the problems facing the region and the world.
Qatar expressed hope yesterday that the resolution would expedite the end of the conflict and have a positive impact on the negotiations.
