Syria stands on the cusp of a new journey of state-building following the fall of the regime of Bashar Al Assad. The new administration in Syria led by interim President Ahmed Al Sharaa has continuously sent positive signals to build an inclusive state and protect the rights of all Syrians.

The new administration convened a National Dialogue Conference in Damascus this week, bringing together delegates and representatives of diverse communities and groups from across Syria. Some of the most important points they agreed were the state’s monopoly on arms and considering any groups outside the country’s official institutions as outlawed. Addressing the delegates, Al Sharaa said, “Syria is indivisible; it is a complete whole, and its strength lies in its unity.”

The state’s monopoly on arms is a crucial step towards the country’s unity, sovereignty, and to ensure rule of law, which is crucial for Syria’s reconstruction, development and prosperity.

Doha has welcomed the convening of the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, terming it a significant step towards consensus, unity, and building a state of law and institutions. Qatar has said that the decision lies with the Syrians in shaping the future of their country. It also underscored the importance of state monopoly on arms and the establishment of a professional national army to consolidate civil peace, security, and stability.

Qatar has supported Syria in its efforts for development and reconstruction. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited Syria last month, where he highlighted the need to form a government that represents all segments of the Syrian people to consolidate stability and move forward with reconstruction, development and prosperity projects. H H the Amir said Qatar will continue to stand with the Syrian people to achieve their goals for which they fought to reach a state of unity, justice and freedom.

Developments in Syria were also discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation H E Sergey Lavrov in Doha yesterday. Qatar has also operated an air bridge to deliver humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people in recent weeks.

The end of Assad’s rule marks the beginning of a new era for Syria. The National Dialogue Conference is indeed a welcome step towards national reconciliation and building a new Syria. Qatar, like other Arab countries, remains committed to supporting Syrian people and all efforts for peace and unity.
