Strengthening ties

Qatar and India ties received a major boost by the recent visit of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to Qatar. There are several strong pillars of Qatar-India bilateral relations including cultural and people-to-people ties as well as trade, investment, and energy partnership.

The relationship between two counties has been steadily expanding in recent years by regular and substantive engagements between the two countries. India and Qatar commemorated 50 years of establishment of full diplomatic relations in 2023. Relations between both countries span across all domains such as political, trade, investment, energy, security, education, culture, and sports.

Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister of Republic of India H E Narendra Modi held a session of official talks yesterday.

During the session, the two sides discussed areas of joint cooperation between the two countries, especially in the economic, investment, development and energy fields. They also exchanged views on key regional and international issues of common concern.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of India H E Vinay Kwatra has said that Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi’s visit to Doha is extremely successful and will facilitate a stronger, deeper and wide-ranging Qatar-India partnership.

Kwatra said the visit laid the foundation for elevating bilateral relations and exploring partnerships in some fresh areas that were tackled in today’s talks including space, technology, and education. The Qatari-Indian talks during the visit covered a wide range of areas of bilateral cooperation, including trade and energy partnerships, investment cooperation, issues related to regional security, cultural rapprochement, and equal relations, and issues of regional and international interest, he said.

Relations between both countries span across all domains such as political, trade, investment, energy, security, education, culture, and sports.

The two countries have strong trade relationship with a bilateral trade of about $19bn in 2022-23. Qatar is an important pillar of India’s energy security. Recently QatarEnergy and Petronet LNG Ltd. signed a long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement for supply of 7.5 MMTPA LNG for 20 years starting from 2028. Qatar is also an important source of foreign direct investments into India. More than 200 flights per week connect the two countries.
