Yet another day has passed without any news of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Bombarding by the Israeli occupation forces continued at different parts with many casualties reported including a little boy, taking the number of people murdered to more than 38,345 civilians and those injured to over 88,295. The Israeli forces continued its unprecedented brutal violence without any impunity flouting all international laws and regulations.
While ceasefire efforts are going on, Israel is trying to stall it and continue with its killing and destroying of infrastructure in Palestinian territories. Reports coming from Gaza City’s Shujaiya district say that civil defence agency crews and residents found 60 bodies inside the piles of concrete and dust left behind after the complete destruction of the city’s infrastructure. The search still goes on and the number of people killed could rise further. Officials said that 85 percent of the buildings in the disaster zone are now not uninhabitable, making hundreds of thousands homeless.
The Arab League yesterday condemned what is going on in the Gaza Strip, including forced displacement, disrupted water supply, and the ban on the entry of food, fuel, and medicine, describing them as a deliberate war of siege and starvation of its residents, exceeding all reasonable and logical limits. The League called on the international community and people of conscience to take a decisive stand against Israeli aggression and support the remaining Palestinian population.
The international community has to come together and exert tremendous pressure to stop this mindless violence which is on the verge of completely destroying an area and its people. As the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pointed out at NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in Washington it’s time for the West to reject double standards regarding the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
“If we are telling our people that we are supporting Ukraine because we are defending the international law, this is the same to what we have to do towards Gaza,” he said. “We need to create the conditions for an immediate and urgent ceasefire,” he said, warning that there is a “real risk of escalation to Lebanon.”
An escalation will only bring more misery to the people and chaos, which could take a long time to heal. It is very important to reach a permanent ceasefire as soon as possible to avoid further killings of innocent civilians and also to make sure essential aid and food reaches the displaced millions. To make this happen the entire international community has to reject double standards and join forces.
