‘Call for action’

As the whole world scrambled to find a way to end the war in Gaza, implement a ceasefire and help those who have been suffering for months without food and other essentials, Israel continued its attack on civilians. Media reports from Gaza have claimed that scores have died in the latest attack by the occupation forces.

All the international institutions have been condemning the mindless violence by the Israeli forces and are calling for a ceasefire and urgent distribution of aid to the millions. To find a way to end the suffering of the Palestinians, a conference was held in Jordan yesterday.

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani participated in the "Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza" conference. The high-level meeting was held to strengthen the collective response to address the difficult humanitarian situation in Gaza. It resulted in significant commitments and strategic plans to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Co-organised by Jordan, Egypt, and the United Nations, the conference gathered heads of state, government leaders, and representatives from international humanitarian organisations.

The situation is so dire and urgent action is needed as Palestinians are facing widespread hunger because the war has largely cut off food, medicine and other supplies. “Almost 3,000 children have been cut off from treatment for moderate and severe acute malnutrition in southern Gaza, putting them at risk of death as harrowing violence and displacement continue to impact access to healthcare facilities and services for desperate families,” the UN’s agency for children’s relief said in a statement. Innocent children have been the victims of this mindless massacre as they not only lost their homes and schools, but many also lost their parents.

“The speed and scale of the carnage and killing in Gaza is beyond anything in my years as secretary-general. The horror must stop,” UN chief Antonio Guterres told the conference.

The push for a ceasefire has been getting stronger and intense diplomatic efforts have been going on. The international organisations will have to take a stronger stand and make Israel follow international regulations and laws for this brutal war to end. Gaza has already been bombed into rubble and rebuilding the territory will take years and huge resources as even hospitals and educational institutions have been destroyed beyond repair. Before the rebuilding efforts, humanitarian aid has to be delivered to millions.

Continued international political support is needed to address the underlying causes of the humanitarian crisis and to push for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
