Qatar is taking steps in all directions to ensure sustainability and save the natural resources for coming generations. Through different initiatives and legislative frameworks, state institutions are making efforts to counter climate change and preserve environmental resources.
Now the Cabinet has approved the draft water law and referred it to the Shura Council. The draft law, which was prepared by the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), comes to achieve water security; preserve water resources; protect them from depletion, waste, or pollution; raise the efficiency of water services and their uses; ensure their quality; and ensure proper maintenance and operation of their facilities.
Qatar is aware of the importance of water, the necessity of preserving it, rationalising its consumption and managing its resources in a way that achieves sustainability, especially since these aspirations align with the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 which aims to make sure that a decent living is provided to its people.
Qatar also works to provide high-quality water services and continuously aims to reach them to the best levels while taking into account local and international health and safety standards. The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has been able in the past years to meet the increasing demand for water in Qatar despite the rate of annual increase in water consumption.
Meanwhile, the Standing Committee of Water Resources in Qatar proposes policies and strategies related to water resources, adopts plans, programs and projects related to the management and development of these resources, and undertakes important initiatives related to enhancing water security and preserving groundwater reservoirs in the State. Kahramaa has also achieved its strategic goals of enhancing Qatar’s water security by increasing the capacity of the strategic water reserve (SWR) and enhancing the ability to face emergency situations.
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has also adopted the latest technologies for detecting water leakages in transmission pipelines which helped reduce water losses to 18 percent, according to some latest reports.
The strategic Water Security Mega Reservoirs played a key role in increasing the water reserve of Qatar by over 2,400 million gallons. It also helped to transfer the water from the north part of the country to the south and vice versa and allow conducting routine maintenance of desalination plants, recently said an official.
The Water Security Mega Reservoirs receive water from desalination plants and then pump it to secondary water tanks to distribute to consumers. The reservoirs, operating remotely, are designed in a way to make expansions as per future demand.
