An important panel discussion highlighting the importance of safeguarding the Gulf identity which derives its strength from Arab and Islamic values was organised yesterday by the Shura Council, in collaboration with the General-Secretariat of the GCC under the theme: ‘Cultural Diversity and the Challenges of Change: The Role of the Gulf Legislative Councils in Preserving the Gulf Identity’.
The Gulf region boasts of a unified rich culture strengthened by the traditions, language, and customs of its people. In a world of rapid change, there are many challenges in preserving a distinct “Gulf identity.”
The formation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in 1981 provided a significant boost to the concept of a unified Gulf identity. This identity is rooted in shared religion, language, history, and cultural and social characteristics. Gulf Legislative Councils (GLC) can ensure that the rich heritage of the Gulf region continues to thrive in the face of change. By harnessing the power of technology for cultural preservation and promotion, the GLCs can ensure that the Gulf identity remains strong and rooted in the digital age.
During his speech at the inaugural panel discussion, Speaker of the Shura Council H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim called for establishing a permanent supreme committee of the General-Secretariat of GCC states to safeguard the Gulf identity and be further assigned with providing counselling and scrutinizing the educational and media content to ensure a robust Gulf identity.
Education plays a key role in preserving the Gulf identity. The educational curriculum should ensure that the students are given a strong foundation in the history, values, and traditions of the Gulf. Digitizing historical records, cultural artefacts, and traditional writings will ensure their accessibility and preservation for future generations. Cultural preservation can be also achieved by supporting local artists and restoring historical sites.
As the President of Qatar National Library H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari pointed out, in his speech, the Arabic language also plays a core role in safeguarding cultural identity. Preservation of the language entails the preservation of collective memory and national sentiments.
Identifying the challenges a society is facing to maintain its cultural identity is of the foremost importance. These challenges need to be addressed by involving all stakeholders and responsible institutions. Working with cultural organizations, community leaders, and educators will bring diverse perspectives to the discussions and ensure that efforts are grounded in the lived experiences of the people. It is vitally important to adapt to changes while maintaining the basic values of society.
