Qatar has achieved a lot in food security sector in recent years from promoting local production to exploring new supply chains.
Now the Ministry of Municipality has readied a new National Food Security Strategy 2024-2030 and it is expected to be launched soon.
Qatar has achieved advanced ranks on the Global Good Security Index and this reflects the efforts made by the country in terms of raising the levels of self-sufficiency efforts, increasing local production and developing agricultural practices as well as adopting modern methods of agriculture. Qatar has adopted a national strategy for food security which relies on the data available in Qatar. All programmes and projects aim to achieve food security in a way to provide food of a high quality at reasonable prices with a suitable and adaptable system addressing climate change.
Qatar National Vision 2030 aims to build a food system capable of resilience and responding to crises and disasters, and encourages the responsible and sustainable production and consumption of food products, while applying the highest standards of quality and safety.
It supports fair trade practices based on the standards of a diversified competitive economy, and improves living standards, which contributes to achieving sustainable development goals by creating lasting harmony between economic, social and environmental development, and achieving prosperity for our people, our economy, and our regional and international surroundings
The National Food Security Strategy has formed a buffer and a safety valve for Qatar in the face of all changes occurred in the past.
The recommendations and opinions of stakeholders in food security issues have been incorporated in the new strategy which will last for seven years in line with Qatar National Vision of 2030, said Director of Food Security Department Dr. Masoud Jarallah Al Marri.
Al Marri said that the National Food Security Strategy 2018-2023 contributed significantly to the development of the food security system in Qatar. The strategy helped increase local production of agricultural food commodities in a sustainable manner, and the diversification of sources of foreign trade to avoid exposure to any potential risks that may arise in cases of crises and emergencies.
2018-2023 strategy built a strategic stock of food commodities in the country, taking into consideration the preservation of the Qatari environment and its sustainable development for future generations on the one hand, and the preservation of natural resources, especially those related to the elements of land and water on the other hand, said Al Marri.
