Reinforcing historic ties

The state visit of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and H H Consort of H H the Amir Sheikha Jowaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani to the United Kingdom at the invitations of H M King Charles III marks a pivotal moment in the enhancement of the bilateral relationship between Qatar and the UK. This visit underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations, characterised by historical depth and a shared vision for future collaboration.

H M King Charles III presented H H the Amir with the Knight Grand Cross, the highest British Order, in appreciation of the distinguished relations between the two countries. In turn, H H the Amir presented HM King Charles III with the Sword of the Founder, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani, the highest decoration in the country. In a significant move, cementing the cooperation between the countries further, Qatar and UK have decided to double the funding for humanitarian assistance and international development initiatives, which will tackle key global challenges such as addressing the root causes of irregular migration and displacement, conflict resolution, education and scientific research.

His Highness’s visit emphasises economic benefits, with Qatar being a vital trading partner for the UK in the Middle East. Qatar’s investments, including notable contributions to the UK economy in sectors such as fintech, clean energy, and life sciences, play a crucial role in fostering growth.

The UK’s first and only joint air squadron since the Second World War is with Qatar. Defence and security cooperation are key pillars of the relationship exemplified by the unique UK-Qatari Typhoon Air Squadron. The visit will reinforce these ties, strengthening the multi-generational security partnership. In the realm of education and cultural exchange, the visit serves as a platform to celebrate and expand collaborative initiatives. With thousands of Qatari students pursuing education in the UK and joint ventures in educational and research fields, the partnership fosters mutual growth and innovation.
