Doha, Qatar: Under the visionary leadership of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the National Planning Council is steadfastly committed to forging close partnerships with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and all stakeholders to propel national development in accordance with the Qatar National Vision 2030. A pivotal moment in Qatar’s strategic and developmental planning unfolded with the issuance of Amiri Decision No. 14 of 2024, formally establishing the National Planning Council.
This newly formed Council, under the guidance of the Prime Minister and with the Minister of Finance as Vice President, assumes the critical responsibility of shaping Qatar’s strategic trajectory. Its inception signals a transformative era, integrating scientific planning and forward-looking strategies to advance Qatar amidst swift global changes.
Within the context of ongoing institutional development and evolving needs at national and global levels, the establishment of the National Planning Council replaces the Planning and Statistics Authority. It assumes a wide array of duties, including formulating national development visions, strategies, and plans, overseeing their execution, and ensuring the realization of the Qatar National Vision 2030. Additionally, it will devise comprehensive visions for successive development phases, coordinate with stakeholders, and monitor progress.
In collaboration with pertinent stakeholders, the Council will devise strategies for economic development and diversification to bolster Qatar’s competitiveness. It will offer technical support, endorse strategic proposals, and assess advancements. Furthermore, the Council will analyse sectoral trends, suggest adaptations, and position Qatar as a frontrunner in relevant domains. In alignment with the Amiri Decision, the National Statistics Center will be established within the Council to cultivate a comprehensive statistical database for Qatar and spearhead statistical initiatives.
Ministries, governmental bodies, and public entities are mandated to comply with the policies, decisions, and directives of the Council, furnishing essential information and collaborating within its areas of expertise. This concerted endeavour aims to propel Qatar towards its developmental objectives and fortify its global stature.
For decades, the Planning and Statistics Authority has been instrumental in shaping the state’s overarching vision in collaboration with relevant authorities. It has been responsible for crafting national development strategies, monitoring their implementation, and conducting studies on population dynamics. The Authority’s pivotal role includes conducting surveys that yield qualitative data on various facets of Qatar’s population development, family structures, and business environment, influencing the country’s competitiveness ranking. The results of these surveys are disseminated to the public and are invaluable to decision-makers, supported by supplementary data and official statistics.
