Qatar always aligns with the global efforts to preserve the natural resources and focuses on the importance of the environment and sustainable development.

Under the generous patronage of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) held the seventh anniversary of its ongoing Tarsheed programme recently under the slogan ‘Towards Sustainability’’.

Kahramaa’s Tarsheed programme has made a financial savings of QR1.75bn in 2018 by reducing the consumption of electricity, water and gas. It’s a significant feat for any organisation and even for a country. It’s also well noted that Kahramaa has saved QR5bn under its Tarsheed programme until April 2018.

Kahramaa’s President and Chairman of the Steering Committee of Tarsheed, Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, said: “Tarsheed programme in 2018 has significantly resulted in reduction of electricity consumption of 6,295 GWh, water consumption of 33.22 million m3 and natural gas consumption of 60,642MCF (million cubic feet), representing a financial saving of QR1.75bn, despite the challenges faced by Qatar since the illegal blockade.”

The aim of the Tarsheed programme is to reduce per capita electricity consumption by six percent, water by 10 percent, and harmful carbon emissions seven percent by 2022. In the country, the Tarsheed programme has helped reduce over 10.6 million tonnes of carbon emission during the last six years.

Kahramaa has recognised internationally for its achievements. Kahramaa won two prominent awards in two different categories of Global Good Governance Awards, constituted by Cambridge IFA, among over 28 countries with more than 76 representations participated in the process of award declaration.

It is a well-recognised fact that Kahramaa is doing everything possible to inculcate and create an awareness of conservation and energy efficiency in all sectors to reduce the per capita consumption of water and electricity and carbon emissions in the country.

Kahramaa’s plan to create an awareness about conservation and energy efficiency in all sectors and all walks of lives to reduce the harmful impact of carbon emissions is also commendable.

Especially targeting young children and inculcating a sense of responsibility among them is very much appreciated.

The SMS initiative — launched in July 2016 under Tarsheed — has emerged as most the effective tool to deter the wastage of electricity and water and the initiative has helped to increase the awareness about 60 percent among the users as it was noted that majority of the violations were committed due to lack of knowledge about the law and punishments. This effort itself has made a savings worth QR45m by reducing 850.43 MCF natural gas consumption and the uses of electricity by over 84 Gwh.

Kahramaa’s Tarsheed programme is a leading example in the region as well as all over the world for the best practices in the conservation of energy and sustainable development.
