
Art and entertainment enthusiasts in Doha are in for a treat with a lineup of exhibitions, workshops and entertainment all happening this month.
Katara Exhibition has collaborated with the Design Museum in London for an exhibition titled ‘Designed to Win’ to be held from March 14 to June 23 at Katara Building 3. The exhibition highlights how design has shaped the sporting world, pushing the limits of human endeavor to achieve records and victories.
It explores key moments where design has played a significant role in progressing sport and looks at themes of safety, performance and examples where sporting bodies have intervened to limit the effects of ‘technological doping’ where new equipment is deemed to give some athletes an unfair advantage over others.
An extensive educational program me and visiting artists’ talks would complement this exhibition.
To celebrate the Qatar UK Year of Culture 2013, a wide selection of Martin Parr’s work in the UK will be on display at the exhibition ‘Martin Parr – Made in the UK’ from March 18 to May 18 at Katara Gallery 1 Building 18.
The expo would highlight Parr’s projects such as ‘Small World’, Parr’s satirical look at global tourism, alongside newer bodies of work such as ‘Luxury’, an insight into the world’s super rich.
The Museum of Islamic Art is hosting Ferozkoh - Tradition and Continuity in Afghan Art. An exhibition showcasing works created by Afghan artists inspired by masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) collection. The exhibition is open from March 20 till June22. Entry fee is QR25 (free on Mondays and for children under 16 years) to visit the Ferozkoh exhibition.
The week-long ‘Tasmeem Doha 2013 – Hybrid Making’ to be organised from March 10 to 17 at VCUQatar Campus, Mathaf Museum and Education City Student Center would offer collaborative workshops, lab sessions and exhibitions using unique approaches.
Art Dubai’s Global Art Forum_7 would kick off in Doha bringing together a diverse line-up of participants, including artists, curators, musicians, strategists, thinkers, and writers for two days of live talks and performances in Doha. It will be held from March 17 to 18 at Mathaf.
After the success of its inaugural edition, the “Halal Qatar” festival would be held again in Katara starting March 22. The ten-day Festival will bring to life a rare insight into the sheep and goat industry allowing the public to interact with shepherds and journey into this essential aspect of Qatari tradition.
For those with penchant for filmmaking, the Doha Film Institute (DFI) is holding Qoul Qasa: Creative Writing Workshop by critically acclaimed Qatari artist Ghanem Al Sulaiti.
To be held from March 11 to 15 at Katara, the workshop will cover all aspects of writing from identifying powerful themes to critical evaluation for aspiring screenwriters. It was launched by DFI’s film financing arm, the Gulf Film Development’s (GFD).
For budding cinematographers, DFI is also offering a five-day workshop on cinematography to be conducted by internationally acclaimed Cinematography teacher Jonathan Harvey (National Film and Television School, UK).
During the ‘Akkas Cinema’ workshop, participants will take their knowledge of shooting and lighting to the next level, via practical demonstrations and exercises, in addition to case-studies of classic and contemporary cinema.
Music lovers may enjoy an evening of music with the performance from C Street Brass at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar on March 14, 6pm at CMUQ.
Founded in 2007, the quintet has recently been appointed Ensemble in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University. Their repertoire is drawn from the standards of brass quintet literature, classical pops, contemporary music, as well as unique transcriptions from all genres.
The award-winning musical comedy Oklahoma! is still playing at the Doha British School Theatre until March 9.
The audience could clap and sing along with the cast during two hours of the exciting show, proceeds of which will go towards the Performing Arts Department at the Doha British School. Tickets priced at QR100 and QR75 are available at The One in Villaggio and Landmark Mall.
