US business team seeks Qatar opportunities

DOHA: A business delegation under ‘Franchise Times/IFA & US Commercial Service Trade Mission’ representing different sectors of businesses including food and beverages industry, education and technology, was here seeking prospective franchise partners to enter the Qatari market.

The six-member trade mission on the last leg of a four-nation visit including UAE (Abu Dhabi, Dubai), Egypt, Jordan and Qatar was here to solicit investment and partners to set up businesses in Qatar.

The companies that were part of the trade mission dominated restaurant businesses including Pollo Tropical, Wing Zone, Johnny Rockets (all restaurants), Greenberry’s Coffee Company, Hertz Equipment Rental and Tutor Doctor (education). 

These companies were represented by J Marc Mushkin, Senior Vice-President, International Development (Pollo Tropical); Hair Parra, Vice-President, International Development (Wing Zone); Steven J Devine, President, International Division Development (Johnny Rockets); Rober Shaw, Senior Vice-President, International Development (Greenberry’s Coffee Company); Rogelio Mrtinez, Vice-President, International Franchise Development (Tutor Doctor) and others.   

Present were KL Fredrick, Director of Harlem US Export Assistance Centre/US Department of Commerce; Scott Lehr, Senior Vice-President, US and International Development of International Franchise Association (IFA); Nancy Weingartner, Executive Editor of Franchise Times among others. 

“Our goal at IFA and Franchise Times is to help educate our membership and the franchise community at large in the United States about the opportunities in the Middle East, particularly in Qatar. This being our last destination of a 10-day tour of the region, we are impressed by the hospitality and response we have received. We look forward to bringing more brands to the Qatari market to work with the local partners,” said Lehr.

As a magazine we are doing the same thing by educating the industry about opportunities in the global market,” added Weingartner. 

Tutor Doctor offers tutoring franchise worldwide. It operates by managing a network of tutors. They have presence in 144 countries. They recently signed an agreement to operate in Saudi Arabia. Tutor Doctor’s services cover all grade levels, from kindergarten to university, and incorporate an understanding of different student learning styles. They even provide tutoring for adults. The company also prepares individuals for SAT and TOEFL examinations. 

Greenberry’s Coffee Co store opened in 1992 in Charlottesville, Virgiania. 

PolIo Tropical, a division of Fiesta Restaurant Group, is a fast-casual restaurant concept based in Miami, Florida. The concept is a Caribbean-inspired fire-grill restaurant..

The Wing Zone concept was launched in 1991. It serves high-quality, cooked to order wings and other items available for takeout and delivery. Today there are Wing Zone restaurants in 25 states in the US and in 23 countries opened or ready to open in the next 18 months.
