Garment workers strike in Phnom Penh

January 01, 2014 - 12:42:33 pm

Garment workers march along a street near Prime Minister Hun Sen’s office as riot police officers walk behind during a protest in central Phnom Penh yesterday. Huddled behind barbed wired fences and stared down by riot police outside Prime Minister’s offices are hundreds of factory workers demanding a doubling of wages and threatening to shut down roads and cripple an industry worth $5bn a year. The government recently agreed to increase the monthly minimum wage for garment workers from $80 a month to $95.
