South Korea to join UN Security Council amid deadlock over North

Seoul: South Korea could take a more active role in getting the United Nations Security Council to punish North Korea for its recent long-range rocket launch, South Korean diplomatic sources said.
South Korea is set to serve as a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Council for two years, beginning January 1.
The Council is the UN’s top decision-making body that can tighten sanctions on North Korea.
Seoul, Washington and other nations condemned North Korea’s December 12 rocket launch as a violation of UN resolutions that ban the communist country from testing ballistic missile technology.
It remains unclear, however, whether China, as North Korea’s key ally and a veto-wielding council member, will agree to imposing additional sanctions on Pyongyang.
North Korea is already under sanctions for its previous rocket launches and nuclear tests.
