Doha: Doha will host on 19-20 December the GCC Lawyers and Arbitrators Conference under the theme of "A promising Legal Investment Environment."
Secretary-General of the GCC Commercial Arbitration Centre (GCCCAC) "Dar Al-Karar", Ahmed Najm, said the conference is a prominent forum held annually in one of the GCC member states gathering lawyers, arbitrators, experts and legal consultants.
The event aims at providing an open platform as well as an academic and transparent space to discuss a number of issues relating to the legal profession, obstacles to its exercise, and means of promoting a culture to resort to arbitration and urging the execution of decisions on direct and indirect investments, he added.
The event will also discuss the theme of Supporting and Strengthening the orientations of the economic state in the enactment of laws and regulations to create a legal and regulatory framework for the establishment of Law Universities to promote the legal academic thinking, the establishment of a Financial Centre, International Courts, Amicable Dispute Resolution Centers as well as means of implementing the international rules in commercial arbitration system, he went on saying
A number of Speakers from the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), Ministry of Justice, the Faculty of Law at the University of Qatar and the Ministry of Interior Police College will take part in the two-day event, he said.
The Conference will also discuss the legal profession, the role of the state to support this profession it, enhance its cultural and humanitarian mission and protect lawyers from illegal competition, he added.
A proposal will be submitted by the Qatar Lawyers Association, Bahrain Lawyers' Society (BLS), Kuwait Bar Association and the committee of lawyers and legal advisers of Jeddah Chamber during this session, he said.
The third theme will review the need to update a set of laws to keep pace with the great development in the commercial, financial and investment business, Najm said, noting that a number of proposals will be submitted including the renovation of Qatari Civil and Commercial Procedure Code, the new commercial companies law ("New CC Law") in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar Draft Legal Profession Act.
The fourth theme will discuss the development of Execution Courts, Najm said, adding that there are ongoing efforts to hold a meeting of GCC Lawyers Association in order to revive the idea of establishing a GCC Lawyers Union.
