DOHA: Six meetings are scheduled on the first day of the FIA General Assembly today — it was announced yesterday.
The five-day annual meeting will begin today with the Region III meeting in the morning session. Today’s proceedings will conclude with deliberations in the FIA Programmes Committee meeting. The hugely popular FIA Prize-giving Ceremony will be held on December 5.
Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) said the meetings will be hosted at the St Regis Hotel.
This event is considered one of the most important occasions on the international motor sports calendar. Last March, Qatar fended off competition from Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Cyprus to win the rights to host the annual meeting.
Representatives from more than 163 member clubs and federations from 116 countries and around 800 guests will attend the event.
This year, the FIA week of celebrations has added a new event — the FIA Prize-giving Challenge, presented by the QMMF.
The thrilling Prize-giving Challenge will be held at the Prize-giving Village’s karting track here on Thursday from 6pm to 9.30pm. FIA Champions and guests will take part in the competition, which has been divided into four activities.
A VIP Hospitality Suite will welcome the FIA delegates and champions’ supporters. Fans will be at the heart of the action thanks to live screens and a TV interview platform.
More than 30 drivers are confirmed for this race, directed by Charlie Whiting, including Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastien Loeb and Petter Solberg.
This special event will be open to the public but as the seating capacity is limited. There will be a raffle to win a double VIP ticket for this special event.
QMMF President and FIA Vice-president Nasser bin Khalifa Al Attiyah: “Thanks to the support of the Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar will be the centre of attention on a variety of fronts.”
Al Attiyah also thanked Omar Al Fardan “for his continuous support ahead of the preparations at St Regis Hotel”.
Al Attiyah, who was re-elected FIM Vice-president last week, also thanked H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, H E Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali, Minister of Youth and Sport, Dr Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, for their support. The QMMF President also expressed his gratitude towards the management of the Hamad International Airport and Customs Authority, Hamad Hospital, Qatar National Bank and Qatar Airways.
