DOHA: The government has geared up to allot plots of lands to private taxi companies to build accommodation for their employees and use it for other operational purpose in a bid to support their services.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with State Public Transport Company Mowasalat (Karwa) on “possession and utilisation agreement of vacant plots allocated for non-commercial use. According to the MoU, Mowasalat (Karwa) will plan appropriately to provide this land for private sector taxi operators. The Ministry of Transport and Communications is increasing its support to taxi operators by allotting land for taxi operations to promote higher service levels and taxi availability, said a statement. The public transport sector, including taxi services plays a key role connecting Qatar and providing mobility for citizens, residents and visitors. The Government is allocating lands to be developed by the taxi franchise companies for use in their operations and for staff accommodation purposes.
The Ministry, represented by the Minister’s Advisor, Hassan Al Hail and Mowasalat-Karwa’s Chairman, Nasser Al Malki signed the MoU in the presence of number of officials from both sides. More than 3,500 taxi are now operated in Qatar by private companies and Karwa and the Ministry plans to increase this number to 7000 over the next few years.
