DOHA: The US is busy with the presidential election campaign but it is keen to see an end to the crisis in Syria and a provisional government being installed there as per the wish of the Syrian people as European countries like Britain, France and Germany have similar views on the Syrian situation as Washington, said Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani told Aljazeera Arabic Channel in an interview last Thursday that the proposal to dispatch Arab troops to Syria is to help end the fighting and not escalate it.

The Premier said he did not agree with Iranian President Mehmoud Ahmedinijad that intervention by Arab troops in Syria would intensify fighting in the country. “We hope that we would get support for this proposal (to send Arab troops to Damascus) from all countries in the region because the idea is to end the fighting in Syria. Arab troops are not going to fight there,” the PM said.

The proposal (to send Arab troops to Syria) is not new. It was mooted by the Emir, H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, several months ago, said the PM.

The Emir had made this proposal because there were indications that the violence and fighting in Syria were set to escalate. “The Emir has only reiterated his call at the UN that intervention from Arabs and the rest of the international community is needed to stop the bloodshed in Syria,” the PM said.

Asked by Aljazeera if the proposal would get approval from fellow Arab countries, the PM said some are in its support but there are others who maintain that any intervention in Syria should be backed by ‘other parties’. Replying to a question about the proposal being accepted by the Syrian regime, the PM said the regime wants to resolve the crisis in its favour by using force. “But in the process more and more human lives are being lost and this is besides the immense economic setback Syria is suffering,” the PM told Aljazeera.
