DOHA: The  Sewer Flow Diversion Scheme from Al Jazeera Street in Bin Mahmoud to Al Maha Intersection at GCC Street has been completed as planned, Public Works Authority (Ashghal), said yesterday.
The upgrade, which started in December 2013 and was completed this July, involved decommissioning of pumping stations to collect and divert sewerage flows through pumping stations 5 and 31.
The decommissioned stations included the temporary pumping station in Msheireb, PS 4 at Al Bidda Park project land, PS 15/1 near Hamad Medical City, PS 26T and PS 26 near the Tennis and Squash Complex.
Such reconfigurations would cut costs of operation and maintenance and reduce the possibility of malfunctions of equipment or rising mains that can impact the life of the surrounding population.
In case of emergency, there are “flow diversion chambers” adjacent to the pumping stations to control sewerage distribution by allowing diversion to the alternative Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in the north, south or west of Doha.
The QR66m project would correspond to accelerating development in Msheireb and Bin Mahmoud, accommodating huge amounts of sewage discharge since the new pipes are installed with a better flow capacity.
The new system was built without any conflicts with present and future major projects. The project ensured that sewer lines do not conflict with Road Tunnel projects.
It also enables construction of pedestrian tunnels for Al Bidaa Metro Station by diverting the sewerage flow away from the pedestrian tunnels and provides future connections to serve the drainage network for Al Bidaa Park project.
Micro-tunnelling technique was used to build a new 1,200mm diameter interceptor sewer about 4km long and a new 800mm diameter main sewer of about 1.2km. The project included construction of 200mm and 400mm diameter sewer lines and other works.
