DOHA: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will introduce three new programmes this Fall and focus on increasing Qatar’s capacity in vital areas of computer science and engineering, according to a senior official.
Introduced through its College of Science and Engineering (CSE) the university will offer a Master of Science (MS) in Cybersecurity; an MS in Data Science and Engineering; and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science and Engineering.
“Cybersecurity very essential for the country’s future, so HBKU is providing a academic program to really educate those young people who are ready to learn cybersecurity and participating in what the country needs,” Dr Ahmad Hasnah, President, HBKU, told the media yesterday.
“That does not mean we will wait until people graduate from the university to work , but professors and our researchers are already working with the Ministry of Interior,” he added. HBKU delivers undergraduate and graduate programs through its College of Science and Engineering, College of Law and Public Policy, College of Public Health, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, and its College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It also provides unparalleled opportunities for research and scholarship through its research institutes, and its Centre of Executive Education delivers customized programs for the business community of Qatar and the region. We are doing everything locally relevant and internationally recognized,” said Dr Hasnah.
In 2015, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute; Qatar Computing Research Institute; and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute were integrated as part of HBKU.  “Research is a main aspect of HBKU. Students get access to research on real life problems, at HBKU and partner universities,” said Dr Hasnah.
The number of Qatari students graduating from HBKU has increased by 48 percent this year. There are 111 students graduating this year, among them 52 from Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, 43 from the College of Science and Engineering, and 16 from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Of the graduating students, 55 percent are Qatari and 45 percent non-Qatari. Over 200 new students enrolled in programmes in Fall 2015. The current number of students is about 450. The male to female ratio is about 1:1 in the current HBKU student population. There are 51 full-time faculty, together with joint faculty from HBKU’s three research institutions and partners inside and outside of Qatar Foundation.
