DOHA: Inspectors from the Health Control Section of Doha Municipality paid 477 visits and conducted 33 surprise raids on food establishments and registered 60 violations of the Law No. 3/1975 during the campaign.
They also issued 27 warnings to violators.
Five violations of the provisions of Law No 8/1990 were also registered and 60 tonnes of foodstuff were found unfit for human consumption and destroyed.
In light of the campaign, and reports of inspectors, the director of the municipality issued administrative decisions to shut down temporarily several food outlets for failing to comply with health requirements.
Veterinary doctors of the municipality last week checked 14,537 slaughtered animals, including 14,292 sheep, 125 cows and 120 camels and destroyed three tonnes of meat.
Health inspectors also checked 324 tonnes of fish and found one tonne of it unfit for human consumption and destroyed it before it could reach consumers.
Officials also destroyed 16 tonnes of vegetables and 50 tonnes of fruits during an inspection campaign last week at the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market.
They reconciled with 40 food outlets after the latter complied with food safety and health requirements.
These outlets included six in the Industrial Area and 34 in Doha.
