Berlin: Ground staff of German airline Lufthansa went on strike early Wednesday, prompting the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights.
Verdi, one of Germany's largest unions, has called on the approximately 20,000 ground staff employed by Lufthansa to stage a one-day strike on Wednesday in order to build up pressure in the ongoing pay negotiations, according to the (dpa).
Lufthansa announced that more than 1,000 flights will be canceled at its Frankfurt and Munich hubs during the busy summer travel season.
The airline fears more cancellations and delays until Friday, the last school day before the summer holidays in Bavaria.
Some 134,000 passengers will be affected by the cancellations, the carrier said.
Verdi announced today that it does not intend to organize further strikes until the completion of the next round of negotiations scheduled for next week.
The union and Lufthansa plan to hold negotiations on Aug. 3 and 4 on pay rise of about 20,000 employees of the company's ground staff.
