Students and officials during the honouring ceremony of the Annual Debate Tournament winners.
Doha: Qatar University (QU) honoured the winners of the 2022 Annual Debate Tournament. The event was attended by Dr. Iman Mostafawi, Vice President for Student Affairs, Abdullah Hamed Al Mulla, Director of Student Activities Department and Dr. Mohamed Diab, Associate Vice President for Student Life and Services, administrators and students.
This tournament is important because it helps debaters to develop better dialogue, discussion, learning and competition skills. It also teaches teamwork, critical thinking and social skills, which contribute to the development of their personality and ability to speak in public.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Mostafawi said: “We are proud of these distinguished achievements of the Qatar University Debating Club, whether on a local or international level. I wish you to achieve more achievements.
“Make sure you all transfer this experience to the students who will join the debate club in the future. I wish you continued success and further achievements.”
In turn, Dr. Diab commented: “We are fully confident in our students who represent Qatar University in local and international forums. They are always keen to make Qatar University proud. Such participation will enhance their experiences and we wish them success in all upcoming tournaments.”
For his part, Abdullah Hamed Al Mulla, said the ceremony was held due to QU’s keenness to honour the winning students. He said the Arabic and English language debate club has won many awards, and is among the school’s oldest clubs.
Al Mulla added: “The Debating Club is keen to participate in local and international tournaments. This year, Qatar University hosted a number of national leagues and championships in cooperation with QatarDebate, and our students achieved a lot demonstrating their high ability in dialogue, debate and challenge.”
Yaser Al Qawasmi, Section Head of Student Clubs & Organizations, noted that the Debating club is preparing for the International Universities Debating Championship in Arabic, which will be held in Turkey next June, and the European Debating Championship in Serbia in December.
Fatima Al Nahhas, student and VP of the English Debating Club at QU, said: “We are proud of our achievements, and this tournament is the first to be held face-to-face after the pandemic. As for the Sir Syed Championship, in which the QU English Debating Team won first place, this is an international recognition for the university and the club. One of the team members won the award for the best speaker in the tournament. We are proud to represent and raise the name of Qatar University.”
