DOHA: The iconic Losail International Circuit will host the first MotoGP race of the season on March 23 but Brazil was yesterday left off the emended 2014 MotoGP calendar released by the world body yesterday.
Qatar’s Losail International Circuit will once again host the only night race of the new season but the race in Brazil - which was managing the event for 10 years - will give way to Argentina instead, according to details.
The race in Argentina will be the first MotoGP event since 1999.
QMMF President Nasser bin Khalifa Al Attiyah said: “This is time for action. We are doing all the preparations. We have already done the set-up for our big show.”
Al Attiyah, who is vice president at FIM and FIA, added: “The MotoGP is always a big task for us but QMMF is always ready for it. For sure, we will do our best to accommodate the guests and teams. Once again we will share our event with the motor sport fans around the world.”
Al Attiyah said QMMF will also unveil its new Moto2 team prior to the first stop on the MotoGP calendar. “Yes, we have Anthony West leading our campaign. He will be joined by 23-year-old Spaniard Roman Ramos, who recently joined QMMF Racing Team,” Al Attiyah said.
In other changes to the MotoGP calendar, Spain’s Aragon Grand Prix moves back a week to September 28 to replace the axed Brazil race, which was due to be hosted in Brasilia. A MotoGP statement on Monday gave no reason for the Brazil race being removed to leave the calendar at 18 races.
Brazil is gearing up to host the 2014 soccer World Cup in June and July but has been beset by problems. Rio de Janeiro will also hold the 2016 Olympics.
